Waitlist Now Open Ahead of Applications
Applications for the next cohort of the SELA Fellowship will open soon — and interested candidates don’t have to wait to get started. SELA has opened a waitlist for young African leaders who want first access to the application when it goes live, a response, staff say, to consistent feedback from past applicants who wished they’d had more lead time to prepare.
Joining the waitlist means being the first to know the exact opening date, receiving tips on how to put together a strong application, and getting early access before the general call goes out publicly. Waitlist members will also receive occasional updates in the run-up to the opening — including, in past cycles, sample outreach project ideas and guidance on what selectors are actually looking for in a strong proposal.
“Every cohort, we see incredible candidates run out of time to prepare a strong application,” said Esther, MD. “The waitlist gives people a head start — time to think through their outreach idea and get their documents ready before the clock starts. We’d genuinely rather someone spend three weeks thinking carefully about their proposal than three days rushing it the night before the deadline.”
Spots in each cohort are limited, and past application cycles have seen a high volume of interest from across the continent, with the applicant pool growing noticeably with each new intake. Because selection weighs the strength and specificity of a candidate’s proposed outreach idea heavily, having extra time to think it through — rather than drafting one under deadline pressure — can meaningfully improve an application’s chances.
Joining the waitlist doesn’t guarantee selection into the cohort itself, and SELA is careful to make that distinction clear. What it does guarantee is that candidates won’t miss the window entirely, and that they’ll go into the process better prepared than if they encountered the application cold.
